While Manchester United will understandably be lamenting the absence of Ryan Giggs in Valencia on Wednesday night, one of the most disappointed will be Spain World Cup winner Juan Mata. The Valencia winger has recently admitted in an interview that he used to idolise Giggs when he was young. Sadly for Mata, Giggs was left behind at Old Trafford because of a hamstring injury picked up at Bolton on the weekend. The omission has left Mata disappointed “It is such a shame that Giggs won’t be playing because I would have loved to swap shirts with him” he said “I used to talk about Giggs a lot, because he was left footed like me and I used to watch his movements.”

A strong argument can be mounted that a horrendous injury list during the last campaign made the difference between Manchester United winning a fourth successive Premier League title and narrowly missing out by a mere point. Without wishing to give an impression that everything is all doom and gloom, signs are beginning to emerge that history may be about to repeat itself. Those same Scousers now appear to have given up all hope of saving their own club by going into a black shirt protest movement. Is that the best they can do? Are they already in mourning?

While Manchester United can rightly feel that points were frittered away in earlier visits to Goodison Park and Craven Cottage, the one picked up from Michael Owen’s equalizer within a minute of coming off the bench at the Reebok Stadium was undoubtedly a point salvaged. To claim otherwise would only be an insult to a resilient Bolton Wanderers side who must have thought that a famous victory was within its grasp. Despite enjoying a 66% share of possession, United were unable to create anything resembling clear cut opportunities as Bolton closed down and unsettled their opponents for the whole ninety minutes leaving the likes of Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov totally frustrated.
