Cristiano Ronaldo could have been an Australian

The 6 years spent at Old Trafford and the £80 million pocketed by Manchester United for his transfer to Real Madrid may never have happened had destiny played a different hand for Cristiano Ronaldo and his family when he was still a small boy on the Portugese island of Madeira.

Ronaldo was only 5 years old when his mother Dolores Aveiro was on the verge of immigrating to Australia together with her parents to join four of her brothers. But a late change of heart meant that the youngster saw his grandparents leave for Perth to start a new life on the other side of the world while he remained in Madeira with his family.

Champions League is NOT a Champions League!

Every Manchester United fan has that fabulous night in Barcelona 11 years ago ingrained in their mind as the greatest football event of their life. After all it’s not every day that an incredible treble can be achieved, it was in all probability a once in a lifetime experience.

When Ole Gunnar Solskjær somehow managed to transform 90 minutes of torture into sheer ecstasy, the millions of United fans around the world erupted into an explosion of joy. To anyone who watched the drama unfold that night it must still seem like it was only yesterday.

Standard Liege defender on his way to United

Reports in Belgium have confirmed that Manchester United have signed Marnick Vermijl from Standard Liege on a three year contract for a compensation fee of  €300,000.The 18-year-old is a versatile defender who can play all across the backline but is predominantly a right full back.

He is expected to team up with United in time for the start of the 2010-11 season and will go into Sir Alex Ferguson’s senior squad. Despite the fact that he has never played a first team game for the Belgian side, he impressed both Sir Alex Ferguson and reserve team boss Ole Gunner Solskjaer whilst on trial at Old Trafford.

If you only buy one book this year here’s one that has only gone into the bookshops a week ago and should create plenty of interest for any true Manchester United fan. It is the amazing story of the legendary number 11.

Frank Worrall is a journalist who writes regularly for the Sunday Times and the Sun. In this excellent book he gives the reader an inside look at the career of the Manchester United and Wales legend Ryan Giggs. His other recent works include Roy Keane: Red Man Walking and Wayne Rooney: Wayne’s World.
