When Ronald Atkinson arrived, known as Big Ron, things started to improve. Atkinson’s side reached the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners Cup and finished fourth in the First Division. In 1985 United again won the FA Cup and ten successive victories in the 1985-86 season put him well ahead of the pack.
