This is a confession from an unashamed Eric Cantona tragic. There must have been millions of words written about the man known as ‘Dieu’ and given half a chance I would have read every single one of them. I simply cannot get enough of the great Manchester United legend. Some of the people reading this may think otherwise but I doubt if there are too many United fans who would. When Four Four Two magazine recently published this piece by Andy Mitten therefore, there was never any question that it had to be shared. My apologies to anyone who may have read it before. If not, you can be guaranteed to enjoy it.

If previous meetings between Manchester United and West Ham are any indication, there should be plenty of goals put away on Saturday. The two clubs have often turned on the entertainment with scorelines of 5-3 at Upton Park and 6-0 at Old Trafford but the 7-1 on the first April Fools day of the ‘noughties’ stands out as the biggest defeat the Hammers ever suffered at the hands of United. The old saying we all learned as children that “It takes one to know one” may not always be correct in the harsh reality of life but there must be times when there has to be some truth in it. Former Manchester United prolific striker Andy Cole is second only to Alan Shearer on the list of all time highest Premier League goal scorers so when he says that there’s not a striker available who would be worth spending a fortune on, he should at least be listened to.

It may be common knowledge but well worth repeating that there is nobody, anywhere who has devoted so many years of his life to Manchester United. Sir Bobby Charlton signed for the club as a schoolboy on January 1, 1953 and apart from a couple of short spells elsewhere following his retirement, has remained at Old Trafford ever since. Stop and think about that for a moment, 57 of his 72 years have been spent serving the one club which virtually became his life.

Former Manchester United goal scoring wizard Andy Cole admits he regrets leaving Old Trafford in 2001 because not only did it cost him numerous honours including two Premier League titles, but also because he failed to make Sven Goran Eriksson‘s 2002 World Cup squad. Cole suggests he left Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to join Blackburn Rovers with the sole aim of being involved at the World Cup having missed out in 1998.
