Like thousands of Manchester United fans – and possibly many City ones, I cannot decide what to make of the shock, free transfer move by Owen Hargreaves to the blue side of town. Why? By all reports, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, West Brom and a number of Championship outfits showed interest in signing him so why go to a club where his chances of even getting a seat on the bench will be highly improbable. You would think that after so long without kicking a ball, giving himself the chance of getting as much game time as possible – and an opportunity to prove his fitness, would have been his major objective.

There appears to be a number of Manchester United fans who are already dismissing the transfer of Ashley Young from Aston Villa as an expensive waste of money. One even went as far as to publicly declare on a club forum that “Here we have another underwhelming signing” – is he? Not if you listen to the opinions of his new and former team mates. Even the now retired United great Denis Irwin has welcomed the addition of Young to Sir Alex Fergusons squad predicting that the England international will become a real success at Old Trafford.

Have a look at the latest sports news and transfers being reported but be warned – only believe what you want.

As someone who idolises Sir Alex Ferguson for what he has done at Manchester United in a quarter of a century, the second last thing I want to see is for him to walk away, saying with rightful satisfaction ‘Mission Accomplished’. The only thing worse would be to see a repetition of what happened to his good friend Jock Stein in the mid eighties – even though Sir Alex may think that if the end is destined to come in an Old Trafford dugout, it will be highly appropriate.

Rather than presenting a Manchester United view on what can reasonably be regarded as our biggest game of the season, let’s have a look at what a Newcastle fan thinks about our visit to St James’ Park. Ed Harrison admits that “We don’t expect anything out of the game with United on Tuesday night. Maybe that’s because Newcastle cannot field anywhere near their best team, with all the injuries and suspensions the club has had this year. Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan will miss the game through suspension and Ben Arfa, Dan Gosling, Leon Best and Alan Smith are all out with injuries, although Gosling is back in training since last Wednesday, which is some very good news.
