The many thousands of Manchester United fans who cannot wait to see the back of  a Bulgarian they nicknamed ‘Berbaflop’ will be well advised to remember the Uruguay hitman who was dubbed Diego ‘Forlorn’ during his two and a half years at Old Trafford. Perhaps his 17 goals in a total of 98 appearances warranted his nickname at the time but Forlan has certainly proven his ability to find the net in the five years since.

Watching former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan score crucial goals in both semis and the final  for Athletico Madrid which took the Europa Cup to Spain made one wonder whether both the title race and the Champions League quarter final against Bayern Munich may have taken a different turn had he been available to partner Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford this season.

Like most Manchester United fans there were no tears shed last night when former United striker Diego Forlan slammed the ball home for Athletico Madrid right in front of  The Kop to send Liverpool crashing out of Europe. After all, those same Merseyside fans were ecstatic to see Bayern Munich go through to the Champions League semi final by eliminating United on the same away goals rule.
