When Manchester United travel to St Andrews on Tuesday night it will be on the eight anniversary of the first meeting between the two clubs since Birmingham City’s first ever season in the Premier League. It took place at Old Trafford on December 28, 2002 with manager Steve Bruce facing Sir Alex Ferguson in the dugouts for the first time since his departure as a United legend. He was to get no joy however as United took the points with a hard fought victory.

Spain’s Valencia comes to Old Trafford on Tuesday night hoping to register their first away win over Manchester United and collect the three points which will take them to the top of Group C. Three previous visits produced two draws and a defeat. With both sides assured of progressing to the knockout stage of the Champions League, another honourable draw will not surprise especially if Sir Alex Ferguson decides to field a starting line up with one eye upon the top of the table clash against Arsenal on Monday.

With Manchester United drawn to meet Liverpool in the FA Cup third round, memories were soon rekindled of the 1999 fourth round clash on the road to the Treble in 1999. Sir Alex Ferguson later reflected that defeating Liverpool was the pivotal point which set up that unforgettable season. Liverpool had taken an early lead through Michael Owen leaving United to hit the woodwork twice and dominating most of the second half without being able to find a reply. Home fans were all but ready to accept an inevitable end to a treble dream before United finally found a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

It happened all of 25 years ago but it has now been revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson was decked in a sensational dressing room bust up by one of his own players. The then Aberdeen boss hit the ground ‘like a ton of bricks’ after being smacked in the face by angry striker Frank McDougall. Fergie is famous for his ‘hairdryer’ treatment who once cut David Beckham’s eyebrow with a flying boot but he more than got a taste of his own medicine after going face to face with the fired up McDougall.

Thirteen matches have now been completed, the tightest Premier League in years is only one third of the way through, yet comments like this from Truly Reds readers have been fairly common “Am I the only United fan to realise that the reason we cannot win games is because of our lack of creativity in midfield! If Fergie thinks we can win any trophy with that midfield, he is mistaken. We need to buy midfielders that are dead ball specialists. We had Becks and Ronaldo scoring how many goals from free kicks? Can anyone remember the last time we scored from a free kick? In my opinion, we need Sanchez, Hamsik and Diarra in midfield, buy Buffon at keeper and finally sell Rooney and buy either Torres, Aguerro or Pato! If we cannot get players of this calibre, I fear our dominance in English football may soon be over!”
