Sir Bobby remembers ’68 – and his thoughts on ’11

Some are unkind enough to refer to it as the Daily Fail – sorry, I cannot agree! Not when The Daily Mail comes up with the sort of interview that Sir Bobby Charlton gave to his friend of 40 years Jeff Powell. There were no leading questions, no double edged attempts to uncover some sort of sensational story which had been laying dormant during Charltons’ decades at Old Trafford. Instead, Powell simply allowed Sir Bobby to recollect his memories of the 1968 European Cup defeat of  Benfica in 1968 and give his thoughts on Saturday’s Final against Barcelona. It makes for a fascinating story which should be read by United – and indeed, all football fans.

Book Review: Denis Law was first King of United

His statue stands outside Old Trafford together with fellow legends Bobby Charlton and George Best. In the 1960s, Denis Law was ‘The King’, a goal scoring genius who relentlessly attacked the game – and the occasional opponent, with a dedication and enthusiasm which held his legions of loyal subjects in devoted awe. The deadly trinity of Law, Best and Charlton swept opposition from its path and led Manchester United to win the FA Cup in 1963 and the League in 1965 and 1967. Had it not been for a cruel injury, Law would have also been part of the side which became the first English club to lift the European Cup.

A 50 year old dream which NEARLY came true

A few seconds, just for a few fleeting seconds, I thought that a dream was about to come true at Upton Park last Saturday. Manchester United had somehow come back from two goals down to lead 4-2 with a few minutes remaining and Nani was getting prepared to come on as a late substitute. My mind suddenly went back to the sixties with images of George Best, Brian Kidd, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and John Aston terrorising opposition defences with a frightening array of  fire power. It was never going to happen again I thought. Imagine Antonio Valencia on the right, Chicharito and Wayne Rooney in the middle, Nani on the left and Dimitar Berbatov sitting just behind them – as Charlton used to do all those years ago. The icing on the cake was Ryan Giggs coming forward from his totally foreign left full back position in the second half! This was the stuff that dreams are made of and only Sir Alex Ferguson could have the vision to even contemplate it.

Scholes has no intention of quitting the new Trinity

It’s a record that is never likely to be broken. The Manchester United trio of Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes have made over 2100 senior appearances between them in a total of 57 years, winning  74 medals, ALL under manager Sir Alex Ferguson – and it’s not over yet with both Giggs and Scholes announcing that they will continue for at least one more season. The statue of sixties legends Law, Best and Charlton has become known as the Holy Trinity and is one of the most famous landmarks at Old Trafford. Can there be any doubt that it’s only a matter of time before a Trinity statue Mark 2 will be erected next to the original one?

The man just keeps going. 37 year old Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has agreed a one year extension to his contract which will keep him at Old Trafford until the end of 2011-12 season. The Welsh wizard signed professional forms with United in 1990, making his debut in March 1991.  In that time he has made a club record 862 appearances, scoring 158 goals. He has won 11 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, two Champions Leagues, one Super Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and a Club World Cup.
