The long anticipated arrival of a big name goalkeeper to Manchester United appears to have been put on hold by Sir Alex Ferguson. The manager has revealed that he would not be replacing goalkeeper Ben Foster who is on the verge of completing a £6m move to Birmingham City. He will instead be promoting Ben Amos from the reserves to the first team squad alongside Edwin Van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak.

A move that has been on the cards for most of the season now appears to be imminent after Manchester United accepted a £6m bid from Birmingham City which will take goalkeeper Ben Foster to St Andrews. It will end a difficult period for the England international who failed to take a chance to be first choice at Old Trafford. He made several high profile blunders when deputising for Edwin van der Sar before Christmas allowing the Dutch veteran to reclaim his place once he had recovered from injury.

Surprise reports have emerged today that Manchester United have made Tottenham Hotspurs midfield maestro Luka Modric their leading summer transfer target. Sir Alex Ferguson sees Modric as a young Paul Scholes, an attacking midfielder and ball player who can make United tick and is thought to be preparing a £25million bid for the 24 year old Croatian midfielder.

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish will be asking Man United for the service of England international keeper Ben Foster in the summer. The old friendship between McLeish and Sir Alex Ferguson will help this deal to go through. The expected departure of on loan keeper Joe Hart will force McLeish to look for a replacement and Foster is a good choice for the Scottish gaffer. Read the full story

Rooney and Owen
Wayne Rooney, who opened his scoring account against Birmingham yesterday, was pleased to see his former international team mate Michael Owen playing his first game at Old Trafford.
