Phil Jones remembers a 7-1 drubbing by United

New Manchester United defender Phil Jones could start Monday’s first home game against Spurs following injuries to Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Rafael, and his impressive display as a substitute at West Brom. Not the easiest of home debuts for a 19 year old against one of the anticipated title challengers. Jones and 23 year old Jonny Evans are likely to line up at the heart of the defence with Chris Smalling in at right back. Jones will be hoping for a better experience than his maiden Old Trafford appearance with former club Blackburn Rovers as the youngster recalled in this interview with manutd.com’s Nick Coppack

Blackburn greed will bite them on the bum

The transfer saga of the now concluded move by Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers to Manchester United will come back to haunt the owners at Ewood Park for as long as they remain there. Why? Because they have shown that their word, even if it’s bound by a contract, cannot be trusted. Whether the fee ended up being £16.5 or £20m plus ‘add ons’ as Rovers manager Steve Keen insisted on Sky News, all trust between players, their agents and the club owners has now been lost forever – all for an additional few million!

Jones to United – and that may be it for Sir Alex

What Sir Alex Ferguson says, he usually means. We have seen it many times. When he insisted in the past that there’s no value in the market, he kept his cheque book closed despite pressure for him to bring in new faces. It may mean that the reported £16million signing of Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers could be Manchester United’s final signing of the summer. Why? Because Ferguson has recently been quoted as saying a number of times that “I’m looking at possibly a couple, maybe three signings which would boost our overall quality in the team.”  That makes it abundantly clear that unless there’s an unexpected development in the next few weeks, Jones will join Ashley Young and David de Gea as the three United transfers that Sir Alex is looking for – and that could be it.

The title race is won as United sets a new record

The race is over, a historic record title has been won and it was all down to one man. If the question is asked as to whether Manchester United could have done it without Sir Alex Ferguson the emphatic answer will be a loud ‘NO’. It’s therefore only right for him to have the last word. “It was a fantastic performance by the lads and the supporters and for everybody connected with the club it’s a great day today” he told Sky Sports. ”The players worked their socks off to get the result we needed. It wasn’t an easy game, we went 1-0 down having given them a bad goal but we kept on and we don’t give in. It looked like it was not going to be our day, we’ve always had it difficult here. It is a local derby and they are fighting for their lives looking for that point, but we kept going and that’s a good quality.”

Vidic can’t wait to clinch the title at Blackburn

Nemanja Vidic is a point away from hoisting his first trophy as Manchester United captain – and he thanks the Reds’ critics for creating the platform for the achievement. The 30-year-old Serb has also warned rivals of the champions-elect that Sir Alex Ferguson’s much-maligned new generation of players will get even better next season. In Fergie’s era as Old Trafford boss, only Gary Neville in November 2005 walked into a skipper’s job facing a more daunting task in the aftermath of Roy Keane’s controversial exit, Neville took possession of the armband in a time of transition and turmoil.
