Club legend Gary Pallister was transferred to Manchester United from Middlesbrough just prior to the 1989-90 season for a then record fee of £2.3 million. He made an ordinary start in which the transfer fee seemed to affect his form but soon began to put in the great performances he would become known for. The 6 foot 4 inch central defender went from strength to strength, forming the backbone of United’s defence for nine years winning a major trophy in every season except 1994-95.

Just as one began to sense a feeling that the frenetic activity in the transfer rumors season had started to ease off, more stories began popping up linking Manchester United to more players. The official club site is keeping tabs on all the gossip with the running total currently standing at 42 players coming in for an estimated £877m and 9 going elsewhere for an estimated £170m. A calculator is obviously not required to come up with a round figure of a mammoth net £600m being outlaid. An absolutely ridiculous amount.

Millions of England football fans are hoping – some against hope, that a picture of captain Rio Ferdinand holding aloft the World Cup will be splashed on the front pages of the global media on the morning of July 12 just like the one of former captain Bobby Moore was on that unforgettable day in 1966. When England were surprisingly defeated 0-2 by the United States in a friendly match played in Massachusetts on June 9, 1993, a little bit of history was created. For the first time since the inaugural international against Scotland in 1892, England was captained by a black player in former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince.
