There cannot be many footballers who have had so much written about them before they hit the age of 20 as has Inter Milan youngster Mario Balotelli. Yet apart from keen students of Serie A, very little is known about the striker who was born in Palermo to poor Ghanaian immigrants in August 1990. Some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League including the Manchester neighbours and Chelsea have been reported to be chasing his signature for weeks with even his own club now resigned to his imminent departure.

There were many eyebrows raised when news came through that Chelsea’s unwanted Joe Cole signed a four year deal with Liverpool after hawking himself to half a dozen clubs. Before anyone throws the accusation that Manchester United fans are obsessed with what goes on at Anfield, it has to be made clear that irrespective of where Cole ended up going, these comments would have been precisely the same.

In football, just as it does in life, a persons best qualities tend to shine through in adversity. Many examples of that fact can be pointed out in a multitude of ways and one of the very best examples was shown this season by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Contrary to many past years, the Carling Cup may well become the only piece of silverware added to the bulging Old Trafford trophy cabinet but that does not even begin to define the story of 2009-10.

All the odds point to the Premier League Championship being surrendered on Sunday afternoon despite the certainty that Manchester United will fight until the bitter end to retain it for a record breaking fourth successive season. Unfortunately reality shows that the outcome is not in their hands with Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti just as desperate to snatch it away in his first season in English football.
