Football often throws up some delicious ironies. They often happen when least expected with not just one coincidence, not even two or three but as in the current season, a hard to believe FOUR times – and that’s only if I happened to overlook any other instances. Just imagine what the betting odds would have been back in August for the following combination of winners to happen simultaneously. Perhaps every one of them was simply written in the stars.

Football and cricket have virtually nothing in common right? Apart from there being another Old Trafford in Manchester where test matches are played. So why is that statement being made by someone who finds cricket tedious on the verge of boring and confesses to knowing nothing about it. Because there may be a lesson to be learned from the recent Ashes series for Manchester United and their fans, a reality check if you like. Englands comprehensive defeat of Australia proved once again that long term success and total domination of any sport must eventually come to an end.

Any Manchester United fan over the age of 25 is bound to have fond memories of the man who was an ever present in the team which brought the first League title back to Old Trafford since 1967 in the inaugural 1992-93 Premier League campaign. Brian McClair appeared in all 42 matches, hitting the net nine times in that drought breaking season.

Just like most kite flying rumours of players coming into Old Trafford can be safely ignored, gossip about who Sir Alex Ferguson is about to sell should also be dismissed at least until an official statement is issued by the club. It does not mean that rumours cannot be noted however because where there’s smoke there can sometimes be a fire. Stories published over the weekend suggest that two key defenders and a promising young striker could find themselves wearing new colours by the time the new season kicks off.
