A 50 year old dream which NEARLY came true

A few seconds, just for a few fleeting seconds, I thought that a dream was about to come true at Upton Park last Saturday. Manchester United had somehow come back from two goals down to lead 4-2 with a few minutes remaining and Nani was getting prepared to come on as a late substitute. My mind suddenly went back to the sixties with images of George Best, Brian Kidd, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and John Aston terrorising opposition defences with a frightening array of  fire power. It was never going to happen again I thought. Imagine Antonio Valencia on the right, Chicharito and Wayne Rooney in the middle, Nani on the left and Dimitar Berbatov sitting just behind them – as Charlton used to do all those years ago. The icing on the cake was Ryan Giggs coming forward from his totally foreign left full back position in the second half! This was the stuff that dreams are made of and only Sir Alex Ferguson could have the vision to even contemplate it.

FLASHBACK 1958: A United-Arsenal historic classic

It was not a cup tie at Old Trafford but this United vs Arsenal classic at the old Highbury Stadium has gone down in the annals of history. Long time Arsenal fan Norman McMillan who was just 13 years old at the time, remembers the match in an article written for arsenal-world.net. It records the vivid memories of a young boy mesmerised by football magic irrespective of club loyalties. As he now recalls “It was the last League game played by the Busby Babes – five days before the Munich Air Disaster.”

Scholes has no intention of quitting the new Trinity

It’s a record that is never likely to be broken. The Manchester United trio of Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes have made over 2100 senior appearances between them in a total of 57 years, winning  74 medals, ALL under manager Sir Alex Ferguson – and it’s not over yet with both Giggs and Scholes announcing that they will continue for at least one more season. The statue of sixties legends Law, Best and Charlton has become known as the Holy Trinity and is one of the most famous landmarks at Old Trafford. Can there be any doubt that it’s only a matter of time before a Trinity statue Mark 2 will be erected next to the original one?

Vidic joins the long list of great United skippers

Perhaps more than any other club, Manchester United has been blessed with many leaders over the years. Not all of them were club captains but legends like Bill Foulkes, Bobby Charlton, Martin Buchan, Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand immediately come to mind, all had the great leadership qualities which played a major role in guiding the club to so much success. Current skipper Nemanja Vidic can now be added to that list. Since coming to Old Trafford from Spartak Moscow five years ago, the big Serbian central defender has developed into a colossus who is one of the favourites to pick up this season’s PFA Player of the Year award in the next few weeks. Vidic spoke with Gemma Thompson from Inside United magazine, where he gave his views on being a Red.

‘Big Dunc’ remembered as United visit Wolves

When Manchester United visit Wolves on Saturday it will be one day short of the Munich anniversary and unlike some other cretins around the country, you can be certain fans at Molineux will mark that solemn occasion with the utmost respect. Apart from the tragedy itself, Wolverhampton lost one of their own who is still revered to this very day. Duncan Edwards was born in the town of Dudley just south of the city and had it not been for the persistence of United manager Sir Matt Busby, the youngster could have easily signed for the Wolves. The story goes that Busby arrived at the Edwards family home soon after midnight to make sure that he secures the youngster’s signature
