Just like most kite flying rumours of players coming into Old Trafford can be safely ignored, gossip about who Sir Alex Ferguson is about to sell should also be dismissed at least until an official statement is issued by the club. Chances that central defender Nemanja Vidic has played his last game for Manchester United appear to be increasing by the day as Sir Alex Ferguson accelerates his efforts to sign a replacement. The two front runners are Juventus’ Italian international Giorgio Chiellini and Denmark’s Simon Kjaer from Palermo. As well as an expected £20m bid from Manchester City for Vidic, Real Madrid also want to secure a deal by offering French striker Karim Benzema as a sweetener for a Vidic transfer.

Manchester United super striker Wayne Rooney continued to collect awards when he was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year on Tuesday night to add to his Football Writer’ Footballer of the Year and the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year gongs. In addition, Rooney also received awards for Best Fan’s Player of the Year and Best Goal of the Year at the Manchester United Player Awards night.
