Ferguson is Cleverley handling young Tom’s career


It’s a hell of a wrap to put on a 20 year old but Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced that midfielder Tom Cleverley will develop into the long term replacement of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes. In what was possibly the best news to come out of Old Trafford this week, Ferguson has confirmed that Cleverley will not be loaned out as has been generally expected saying that “Tom has got outstanding qualities as far as goalscoring is concerned, so he is going to stay”

‘Second can never be good enough’ says Charlton


To Old Trafford legend Sir Bobby Charlton the challenge is simple “It is crucial that United reassert their dominance in the Premier League, anything other than the championship trophy will be failure” he says as if his demand is the easiest thing in the world to achieve. And the 1966 World Cup winner is confident that United would have learned from the mistakes which may have been made last season.

The annual Charity Shield – sorry, it’s called The FA Community Shield these days, is nearly upon us again which usually means a nice day out at Wembley for Manchester United fans…and precious little else. It’s a trophy that United has lifted 17 times in its history, 13 outright and 4 shared, which is more than any other club but does anyone really care?

John Carey – Busby’s first captain at Old Trafford


If the name John Carey is mentioned to most Manchester United fans today, the response is likely to be a blank stare together with a puzzled question of John who? Yet Carey was the man Sir Matt Busby put his faith in to lead the first of his many teams after taking over the reins at a bombed out Old Trafford when World War 2 came to an end. The Irishman went on to captain the side at Wembley in the 4-2 defeat of Blackpool in the 1948 FA Cup Final and was four times runners up in the old First Division between 1946/47 and 1950/51 before United finally clinched the title in 1951/52.
