Transfer deals between Manchester United and Wigan have been few and far between over the years. But there’s little doubt that bringing the then 23 year old Antonio Valencia to Old Trafford at the end of June 2009 has been one of manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s shrewdest ever signings. The Ecuador international was included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in his debut season for the club, then grabbed United’s opening goal of the current campaign in the Community Shield 3-1 defeat of Chelsea at Wembley in which he was named Man of the Match. Within a matter of weeks however, the bulk of his season come to an abrupt halt.

Did it really have to come to this? Why should a quasi military operation be required for a highly anticipated European Champions League cup tie at Old Trafford? Stringent security measures will be put in place for Rangers fans travelling to the game because violence marred their last visit to Manchester for the Uefa Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg at Eastlands in May 2008. This time, the Scottish team’s fans will be forced to meet at Wigan Athletic’s DW Stadium before boarding official coaches to Old Trafford.

It has only been one week since Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson declared that his young midfielder Tom Cleverley was remaining at Old Trafford this season rather than being sent out on another loan spell. It therefore came as a surprise when it was announced on the final day of the transfer window that the 21 year old agreed to spend the remainder of the 2010-11 season on loan at Wigan Athletic. That decision has caused a certain amount of anger towards Sir Alex amongst some United supporters, an anger that Truly Reds believe is totally unjustified.

Chelsea’s Premiership deciding game in the seasons climax at Stamford Bridge on Sunday is a perfect example of the wonderful stories that football can so often throw up. While champions Manchester United will be desperately battling Stoke City at Old Trafford for the three points which may give them a slim chance of retaining their title, a 38 year old goalkeeper who was rejected by United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson 19 years ago will be doing his utmost to help Wigan deny Chelsea a Premiership that appears to be within its grasp.
