When Manchester United made the trip to the Stadium of Light on Boxing Day 2007 Sunderland had gone through an up and down experience which would have turned anyone dizzy. Relegated in 1996-97, they were back among the big boys in 1999-2000, down again in 2002-03, back up for just the one season in 2005-06 then finally promoted to stay in season 2007-08. United did not show any Christmas cheer to the Premier League newcomers that day but there’s little doubt that things will not turn out to be so one sided on Saturday.

Why am I not surprised? It was always going to be THE headline. And sure enough there it was in The Sun on Wednesday, within a couple of days after the Wayne Rooney story broke. “Real Madrid To Offer Manchester United Forward Wayne Rooney Escape Route From English Press” it screamed before continuing with “Real Madrid president Florentino Perez could be set to offer Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney an escape route out of English football by tabling a massive offer for the striker, reports suggest.”

“It took just three years, thirty two games and thirteen goals but Andy Ritchie managed to cement his place amongst a special group of players that will forever be regarded as favourites at the Theatre of Dreams.” That’s how the official club website describes the former Manchester United striker who was at Old Trafford from 1977 to 1980. Ritchie is a committed Dimitar Berbatov fan saying that what the Bulgarian could need more than anything is a constant run of matches.

An army of world wide Manchester United fans only have a matter of hours to wait before discovering what the European Champions League has in store. He’s the treble winning legend who always played with a smile on his face, the goal scoring machine who was loved by every Manchester United fan. Yet there he was at 38 years of age, playing against Everton in front of 40,000 fans, thousands of miles away in far away Sydney. Yes, Dwight Yorke still has that ever present mischievous grin and is still doing the business years after his days at Old Trafford came to an end.
