There were many eyebrows raised when news came through that Chelsea’s unwanted Joe Cole signed a four year deal with Liverpool after hawking himself to half a dozen clubs. Before anyone throws the accusation that Manchester United fans are obsessed with what goes on at Anfield, it has to be made clear that irrespective of where Cole ended up going, these comments would have been precisely the same.

He’s the treble winning legend who always played with a smile on his face, the goal scoring machine who was loved by every Manchester United fan. Yet there he was at 38 years of age, playing against Everton in front of 40,000 fans, thousands of miles away in far away Sydney. Yes, Dwight Yorke still has that ever present mischievous grin and is still doing the business years after his days at Old Trafford came to an end.

The obsession Manchester City has with becoming a bigger club than United has produced a number of bizarre attempts in the last couple of years. Putting up giant billboards in the City centre, paying record transfer fees for players who can barely last 12 months at Eastlands and having Chief Executives making boastful claims in New York City bars all failed to make an impression so now they’re trying the most childish one of all. It almost seems as if City is trying to convince itself that it really is a big club.
