Carrick refuses to contemplate another failure

England midfielder Michael Carrick had never experienced an end of season Manchester United dressing room in which there was no champagne soaked Premier League trophy to celebrate another title winning campaign – until last May. Sir Bobby Charlton remembers…AND looks ahead

It may be common knowledge but well worth repeating that there is nobody, anywhere who has devoted so many years of his life to Manchester United. There can be no denying that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is so far having an ordinary tournament in South Africa – as is the team itself. To do so will be to ignore the reality that has been witnessed with our own eyes. What everyone must be careful of however is that the media frenzy surrounding Rooney does not drive him away from Old Trafford, England and into the welcoming arms of Jose Mourinho in Madrid.

Rooney may be too committed for his own good

England’s final warm up game before kicking off their World Cup campaign could have easily seen striker Wayne Rooney red carded – and it may have done him the world of good. Referee Jeff Selogilwe called him a foul mouthed liability in the 3-0 defeat of  local club side Platinum Stars after Selogilwe booked the super striker for swearing saying “Rooney insulted me, he said ‘F*** you”
