A United Wembley destiny – simply BELIEVE

The old saying says that  ’A thousand people, a thousand opinions’ applies to football more than anything. There’s absolutely no doubt that many are heavily biased, yet they cannot be totally ignored! Some are more objective than others so it does no harm to at least listen to what the ‘experts’ have to say. Whether they count for anything at the end of the day is a completely different question but they’re all part of the tension built anticipation which forms the climax for what may turn out to be an unforgettable Manchester United season.

Rio opens up to The Sun – then sends a warning

Rio Ferdinand has laid bare the secrets of another season of phenomenal success at Manchester United. *Wayne Rooney’s decision to stay at Old Trafford crushed the fight out of United’s title rivals.

*United’s brilliant young Mexican striker Javier Hernandez should have been named Footballer of the Year.

Ferdinand tells his real story – warts and all!

It must be made clear that this is NOT the latest book written by Rio Ferdinand but it can be argued that it’s the most revealing. In a 384 page, hardcover autobiography written in 2006, ‘Rio, My Story’ talks about his success on the pitch including high drama in the Champions League, the World Cup and a dramatic Premiership victory with Manchester United. If success on the pitch has kept Ferdinand on the back pages, his off pitch story has made him a regular on the front pages.

To Sir Alex – with many thanks from Barcelona

There are few things in this world that gives more satisfaction than watching an innocent, starry eyed child develop into a mature, successful man. It can happen in any walk of life but more so in football where there are relatively few opportunities in a dog eat dog environment. One such man is Spain and Barcelona central defender Gerard Pique who came to Manchester United from the Spain as a 17 year old and stayed four years before returning home. At the age 24 he is now a World Cup, twice Champions League, twice La Liga and a Premier League winner yet he still rates those early years at Old Trafford under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson as immensely critical to his success.

Chelsea opens race but it’s still United or Arsenal

It’s wide open now! Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat of Manchester United at Stamford Bridge will not help the Blues retain their title but it opens the door for Arsenal to take the initiative in what still appears to be a two horse title race. Yet it looked so different at the break. Wayne Rooney had given United a deserved lead when they were clearly dominating the game and gave the impression that Chelsea were going to find it difficult to get back into it in the second period. But that’s precisely what the reigning champions did, taking the game to United and totally controlling the middle of the park for long periods.
