Why Liverpool almost lost the £50m Torres jackpot

It can now be revealed that the sensational £50m move of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres to Chelsea came close to being scuttled just minutes before the transfer deadline! Liverpool’s American owner John Henry could do little more than anxiously wait by his phone as late negotiations took place between two key figures, totally unaware of how deals like this are sealed whenever the West London club is in the market for a high profile player. The record British transfer was completed just before the transfer window was closed when agreement was finally reached in time for the paperwork to be lodged with the Premier League.

The Torres Song – It’s Here Already!

The transfer hasn’t even yet been finalized, the ink isn’t even on the contract let alone dried, but already the good folks of the world of Twitter have provided us with a great song, taking the mick out of the scousers and the fact that their beloved, bestest, most favouriteist “adopted scouse son” has turned his back on them, choosing the lure of Abramovich’s millions over the “glory” and “passion” of Liverpool. “We thought he understood us” they’ll bemoan. There can only ever be one other which will ever surpass it and even in the wildest of dreams, a story claiming that “Hodgson wants Gary Neville at Anfield” can never even begin to be imagined

City can’t stop pretending that it’s a big club

The obsession Manchester City has with becoming a bigger club than United has produced a number of bizarre attempts in the last couple of years. Putting up giant billboards in the City centre, paying record transfer fees for players who can barely last 12 months at Eastlands and having Chief Executives making boastful claims in New York City bars all failed to make an impression so now they’re trying the most childish one of all. It almost seems as if City is trying to convince itself that it really is a big club.
