With the chances of Manchester United making a big name signing this summer receding faster than England’s chances of ever winning another World Cup, attention should turn to some of the outstanding young talent on display in South Africa. A handful of good performances in the tournament will obviously not guarantee long term success at Old Trafford but just like new signing Javier Hernandez made a huge impression for Mexico, there are others who have shown the sort of potential that Sir Alex Ferguson may be searching for. The many thousands of Manchester United fans who cannot wait to see the back of  a Bulgarian they nicknamed ‘Berbaflop’ will be well advised to remember the Uruguay hitman who was dubbed Diego ‘Forlorn’ during his two and a half years at Old Trafford. Perhaps his 17 goals in a total of 98 appearances warranted his nickname at the time but Forlan has certainly proven his ability to find the net in the five years since.

Even when it always seems to favour  United? “It’s a quality that’s part of our history” says Sir Alex Ferguson. Manchester United boost their hopes in keeping the Premiership trophy at Old Trafford for the fourth year in row by beating Liverpool 2-1. Fernando Torres broke the deadlock by scoring an early goal. Wayne Rooney missed a penalty, but he was able to tap in the rebound. In the second half Park Ji Sung head home to send United back to top. Read the full story
