Like thousands of Manchester United fans – and possibly many City ones, I cannot decide what to make of the shock, free transfer move by Owen Hargreaves to the blue side of town. Why? By all reports, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, West Brom and a number of Championship outfits showed interest in signing him so why go to a club where his chances of even getting a seat on the bench will be highly improbable. You would think that after so long without kicking a ball, giving himself the chance of getting as much game time as possible – and an opportunity to prove his fitness, would have been his major objective.

BBC Sport reports that “The Premier League has changed their rules on so called ‘weakened’ teams.  Top flight clubs will now be allowed to pick any player in their 25 man matchday squad without fear of sanction” Read the full BBC report HERE. All I can say is hear, hear. Common sense has won the day. Truly Reds made comment on this matter two months ago in THIS  article prior to the final match of the season. At that time, United were being threatened with being fined if  Sir Alex Ferguson fielded what the League did not consider to be his strongest side.

While Wigan were shooting themselves in the foot with their lack of discipline at Old Trafford on Saturday, young Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley was sitting in the stands wondering what his future held. Being on loan to Wigan meant Premier League rules prevented him from taking his place in the visitor’s line up. It must have left him wondering if the absence of Antonio Valencia, Ryan Giggs, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves through injury may have provided an opportunity for him to be given a place in the United midfield.

That horrendous run of injuries which gave Sir Alex Ferguson so many nightmares this time last year are rearing their ugly head once again. Out of the 25 player squad Sir Alex selected at the beginning of the season, eight are either definitely out of contention for the visit to Villa Park on Saturday or are not expected to recover in time. Rooney, Hargreaves, Valencia, and Owen are all unavailable while Evra, Rafael, Anderson and Giggs are highly doubtful to make a full recovery.
