Just like most kite flying rumours of players coming into Old Trafford can be safely ignored, gossip about who Sir Alex Ferguson is about to sell should also be dismissed at least until an official statement is issued by the club. It does not mean that rumours cannot be noted however because where there’s smoke there can sometimes be a fire. Stories published over the weekend suggest that two key defenders and a promising young striker could find themselves wearing new colours by the time the new season kicks off.

It’s hard to know whether it’s old age catching up or whether the rumors during the off season are becoming more stupid and harder to believe as years go by. This week’s reported interest by Manchester United for Dutch Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder is a case in point. The story was headline news in all the media both in the UK and Italy on Wednesday without either Sir Alex Ferguson or anyone from the club acknowledging or denying such interest.

If Sir Alex Ferguson can only afford to sign one cheque this summer, it should be made out to Inter Milan for the signature of classy Holland midfielder Wesley Sneijder. So many names have been linked to Manchester United thus far, so many hopes have been raised and dashed, that one begins to wonder if there will be any signings made at all. Those hopes have risen sky high again with reports that Ferguson wants the 26 year old to spearhead next seasons bid for glory.

There can be no denying that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is so far having an ordinary tournament in South Africa – as is the team itself. To do so will be to ignore the reality that has been witnessed with our own eyes. What everyone must be careful of however is that the media frenzy surrounding Rooney does not drive him away from Old Trafford, England and into the welcoming arms of Jose Mourinho in Madrid.
