Kiko returns home – but will he make the grade?

Federico Macheda has vowed to learn from the experience of a disappointing loan spell with Sampdoria as he prepares to rejoin the United squad. The 19 year old striker opted for a temporary return to his native Italy in January instead of going on loan to a top flight English club but the Genoa side’s relegation scrap meant he was used sparingly as the club ultimately failed to avoid the drop from Serie A.

Can Buffon be part of Gazza’s testimonial deal?

Gary Neville’s 18 year Old Trafford career will be honoured when Manchester United tackle Italian giants Juventus in a testimonial on Tuesday, May 24. I don’t want to seem as if I’m counting my chickens but the European Champions League Final at Wembley is scheduled for May 28, just four days later. Tuesday May 31 would have seemed to be a far more appropriate date for the testimonial. What a wonderful way it will be to celebrate IF United can manage to lift Big Ears. Juve’s world cup winning keeper Gigi Buffon has long been touted as a possible replacement for the retiring Edwin van der Sar in summer which raises speculation that the choice of Juventus may be part of an overall deal. Food for thought!

Gary Neville’s career epitaph “I did my best”

And that came straight from the horses mouth. Red Nev was never the most pretentious footballer during his 20 year career with Manchester United and England. He always knew his limitations but sheer determination, undiminished will to win and a good old fashioned work ethic provided a career which genuinely earned him the often overused term of a legend. In an exclusive wide ranging interview with the clubs Inside United magazine last week, Neville was asked by Gemma Thompson to sum up his career in one sentence – his prompt reply was a simple “I did my best”, a typical, understated response from a man who never held any airs and graces about himself. Neville also remembers his many career highs in a fascinating one on one interview.

‘I have more in my life than football’ insists VDS

Following that quarter Final 2-0 defeat of Arsenal at Old Trafford, Manchester United are now just two wins away from lifting the FA Cup for the first time since 2004. Veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar knows what must be done to make his heroics in that game worthwhile. “An FA Cup winners medal would mean a lot despite what I have already won in my career” he said “it is there on my list but I wouldn’t look back in regret if I don’t win it. In any case, it doesn’t do a lot for me to lose a semi final. Football is about winning trophies. Although we’re at Wembley we are still one match away from the final.”
