Following that quarter Final 2-0 defeat of Arsenal at Old Trafford, Manchester United are now just two wins away from lifting the FA Cup for the first time since 2004. Veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar knows what must be done to make his heroics in that game worthwhile. “An FA Cup winners medal would mean a lot despite what I have already won in my career” he said “it is there on my list but I wouldn’t look back in regret if I don’t win it. In any case, it doesn’t do a lot for me to lose a semi final. Football is about winning trophies. Although we’re at Wembley we are still one match away from the final.”

21 April 1999, Stadio Del Alpi, Turin, Champions League Semi Final, second leg – The man who will be trying to mastermind a Marseilles defeat over Manchester United at the Velodrome on Wednesday night was an influential member of the Juventus side in that unforgettable match. Midfielder and France World Cup winning captain Didier Deschamps admitted “United played superbly. We did well in the first 20 minutes but after that we really suffered and they deserved to win. We should have won the away leg but at 2-0 up we should have done the hardest part.” Deschamps won everything as a player and has so far had a hugely successful start to his career as manager. He gave Sun Sport’s European Football Correspondent Antony Kastrinakis an exclusive interview at Marseille’s training ground ahead of the French champs’ clash with Manchester United in the Champions League.

Despite the heavy 0-4 defeat suffered at West Ham in the Carling Cup last week, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to again leave a number of senior players out of his starting lineup for Tuesday night’s Champions League meeting with Valencia. Both clubs have already qualified for the knockout round although top spot in Group C is still up for grabs. United have 13 points from five games and will win the group if they avoid defeat against the Spaniards.

What does a manager look for in a keeper? Is it maturity and experience which includes domestic and European honors together with a World Cup winning medal? It cannot be easy to find someone who has all those qualifications yet still be capable of offering five, six or more years of service. But one man who can do just that is Juventus and Italy international Gigi Buffon who is reported to be on the radar of Manchester United goalkeeper coach Eric Steele.
