Manchester United boost their hopes in keeping the Premiership trophy at Old Trafford for the fourth year in row by beating Liverpool 2-1. Fernando Torres broke the deadlock by scoring an early goal. Wayne Rooney missed a penalty, but he was able to tap in the rebound. In the second half Park Ji Sung head home to send United back to top. Read the full story

They came. They saw. They went back to Merseyside with tails between their legs and crying in their beer. That’s despite all their big talk in the days leading up to the game! But let’s be fair, not all Liverpool fans are totally deluded – only the vast majority. Manchester United will be the ones on red alert when Liverpool visit Old Trafford on Sunday for a Premier League match neither side can afford to lose. United were thumped 4-1 by Liverpool at home last March and still went on to win the championship but the stakes are higher than ever now.
The league leaders are just two points clear of Chelsea, who have a game in hand and no Champions League to distract them after being dumped out by Inter Milan, and Arsenal as the season enters the final stages.

At some point during the next season Sir Alex Ferguson will have to make a decision which will be present him with an agonising dilemma. Goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar will turn 40 in six months time and while the giant Dutchman continues to show the same class that has been his hallmark throughout his long career, the time is fast approaching for him to hang up his gloves.

Ryan Giggs is fighting to be fit for Sunday’s eagerly awaited Premier League showdown with Liverpool at Old Trafford. United’s 11 times title winner has been out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad since fracturing his arm five weeks ago when the 36 year old hurt himself in an accidental collision against Aston Villa at Villa Park in early February.
