The £1.2m Sir Alex Ferguson paid Leeds United for Eric Cantona way back in 1992 is widely regarded as the best deal ever negotiated in the Premier League. The shrewd Manchester United manager may now have hit the jackpot again with the £7m acquisition of Mexico striker Javier Hernandez, himself admitting that “On the back of his performances in South Africa, a lot of teams would have been after him and he would probably have cost us two or three times as much”. In addition to that, the club website received 50,000 new registrations from Mexico alone within 24 hours of announcing his signing from Chivas de Guadalajara in April ensuring that plenty of number 14 shirts will be bought by Mexicans this season.

The old saying we all learned as children that “It takes one to know one” may not always be correct in the harsh reality of life but there must be times when there has to be some truth in it. Former Manchester United prolific striker Andy Cole is second only to Alan Shearer on the list of all time highest Premier League goal scorers so when he says that there’s not a striker available who would be worth spending a fortune on, he should at least be listened to.

It only seems like yesterday but it has been all of 15 years since former Liverpool star and BBC football pundit Alan Hansen coined his memorable phrase “You’ll never win anything with kids” following Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day of the 1995-96 campaign. Those “kids” of course went on to win the double by the end of that season forcing the unfortunate Hansen to forever be stuck with those words.
