In Defence of Michael Carrick

Much like Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Carrick is a player that seems to divide opinion amongst the United faithful. Ask many fans for their opinion of the midfielder, and the first response you will probably receive is “big-game bottler”, a reputation that was firmly cemented for Carrick following his performance against Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League final.

Such criticism is harsh though, any good United fan will tell you that things could have been different in that final were it not for the ridiculously cruel suspension of Darren Fletcher, who would have been able to press the Barcelona midfield and free Carrick up for more creative duties. As Henry Winter pointed out in his post match analysis:

Macheda double gives United a derby win over City

Reserve team matches are not exactly seen as a highlight on the season’s calendar but Manchester United’s clash with City on Tuesday night had more than the normal level of interest. United fielded a side worth £48 million against their multi millionaire neighbors in the 3-1 victory in the Manchester Senior Cup at Hyde’s Ewen Fields ground. Brazilian midfielder Anderson returned to action for the first time since suffering cruciate ligament damage in February by making a 60 minute appearance.

Anderson on the way back but Stoke wants Gibson

If asked, you can rest assured that Manchester United Brazilian midfielder Anderson will be the first to admit that he’s a very a lucky man. Instead of preparing for the new season with his team mates at Carrington, he could just as easily be lying in a hospital bed in Portugal…or worse. He was fortunate not to suffer serious injury last month when he had to be dragged unconscious from the blazing wreckage of his high powered sports car in the early hours of the morning after allegedly spending the previous night in a nightclub.

Carrick refuses to contemplate another failure

England midfielder Michael Carrick had never experienced an end of season Manchester United dressing room in which there was no champagne soaked Premier League trophy to celebrate another title winning campaign – until last May. In the three years since his £18million move from Tottenham, the 28 year old had only known success at Old Trafford and is determined not to go through that feeling of ‘what might have been’ again.

No useless predictions, just our wishes for United

Just hours from the new season kicking off and as always, every man and his dog are fearlessly giving their predictions of what the outcome in May will end being. The majority of them mean very little as they are only based on sheer guesswork and wishful thinking so Truly Reds has decided that rather than play that pointless game, we should simply nominate what is admittedly nothing more than a wish list.

Ferguson is Cleverley handling young Tom’s career

It’s a hell of a wrap to put on a 20 year old but Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced that midfielder Tom Cleverley will develop into the long term replacement of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes. In what was possibly the best news to come out of Old Trafford this week, Ferguson has confirmed that Cleverley will not be loaned out as has been generally expected saying that “Tom has got outstanding qualities as far as goalscoring is concerned, so he is going to stay”
