You have to hand it to good old ‘arry. The Tottenham Hotspur manager went to a lot of trouble in his vain attempt to lure England captain Rio Ferdinand away from Old Trafford but as was to be expected, Sir Alex Ferguson soon told Harry Redknapp were to go. The Spurs medical department was even instructed to study the nature of Ferdinand’s injuries and were convinced that they could get 100 games out of him over the next two seasons.

What a difference twelve months can make! It was only this time last year that calls for Sir Alex Ferguson to show Nani and Dimitar Berbatov the Old Trafford door were growing louder. Yet apart from each grabbing a spectacular goal on Saturday, they turned on a performances which had ‘class’ written all over it. Together with veteran Paul Scholes they ran the show in a game that United never looked like losing.
The only concern in an otherwise polished display was the amount of goalscoring opportunities which continue to go begging game after game. Both the Hammers and Newcastle could, and should, have been beaten by twice the margin this season while the failure to take the chances created at Craven Cottage proved costly. It’s a waste that Ferguson will certainly be having a serious look at.

It’s hard to imagine anyone in the Manchester United party visiting Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon looking forward to the trip more than 20 year old defender Chris Smalling. The young man has not even had the opportunity of stepping onto the Old Trafford turf for his new club yet which could result in him making his Premier League debut in the famous red shirt in front of his former fans before his new ones get a chance to see him in action.

Like every other football club manager Sir Alex Ferguson has made his share of mistakes during his 25 years at Old Trafford but admits that his biggest one was accepting an offer from Lazio for Jaap Stam at the start of the 2001-02 season. Fergie has since made his peace with the central defender who was sold against the backdrop of dressing room revelations in his autobiography and doesn’t mind admitting that he is still troubled by selling the big Dutchman.

Just like most kite flying rumours of players coming into Old Trafford can be safely ignored, gossip about who Sir Alex Ferguson is about to sell should also be dismissed at least until an official statement is issued by the club. It does not mean that rumours cannot be noted however because where there’s smoke there can sometimes be a fire. Stories published over the weekend suggest that two key defenders and a promising young striker could find themselves wearing new colours by the time the new season kicks off.

It only seems like yesterday but it has been all of 15 years since former Liverpool star and BBC football pundit Alan Hansen coined his memorable phrase “You’ll never win anything with kids” following Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day of the 1995-96 campaign. Those “kids” of course went on to win the double by the end of that season forcing the unfortunate Hansen to forever be stuck with those words.
