It has only been one week since Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson declared that his young midfielder Tom Cleverley was remaining at Old Trafford this season rather than being sent out on another loan spell. It therefore came as a surprise when it was announced on the final day of the transfer window that the 21 year old agreed to spend the remainder of the 2010-11 season on loan at Wigan Athletic. That decision has caused a certain amount of anger towards Sir Alex amongst some United supporters, an anger that Truly Reds believe is totally unjustified.

“The more things change the more they remain the same” is a saying which has been around since Adam was a boy. I have no idea where it originally came from but it’s difficult to argue against the truth in it. An entry in the Sunderland Fan Blog which explains how all the grand plans of a club that became known as “The Bank of England” came so close to ending in disaster will send shivers up and down the spine of Manchester United’s cross town rivals and raise questions whether history may be on the verge of repeating itself.

The name is Scholes – Paul Scholes and he is the man who never ceases to amaze. At the age of 35 and starting his 17th Premier League season, he turned on a performance which defied everything anyone can possibly expect. Even his manager Sir Alex Ferguson who has seen it all over the years, was moved to hail the display Scholes put on in the 3-0 win over newly promoted Newcastle United. The veteran was instrumental in Manchester United’s success at Old Trafford, running the midfield and creating two of the three goals.

If there is one quality which Sir Alex Ferguson has always demanded from his Manchester United players above all else is a team unity of purpose without which success can never be possible. It’s a unity which is now being threatened by well meaning fans who may not realize the damage that they are causing, leaving the manager with little doubt that the ill feeling towards the club’s owners could wreck his side’s bid for glory

While many Manchester United fans would love nothing better than to secure a 19th Premier League title at the end of the upcoming season in order to break the record shared with bitter rivals Liverpool, manager Sir Alex Ferguson concedes that his main objective is to obtain a fourth European Champions League saying that “For me, during the history of this club, the European Cup is a big attraction. That must be a priority.”
