FLASHBACK 1999: When Toon was a Treble victim


Manchester United travel to Newcastle just three days after hopes of another treble was snuffed out at Wembley but when the ‘impossible dream’ was achieved in 1999, it was the same Toon who provided one of the last hurdles for United. The FA Cup Final was the second of the three trophies which had to be won in order to keep the dream alive, leaving only Big Ears needing to be lifted in Barcelona four days later. As Mark Bradley from PA Sport reported at the time “Their night of destiny now awaits them in the Nou Camp but for the time being United can celebrate their third Double of the 1990s”

Why Wenger's kick off proposal is not practical


Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants to see title contenders kick off their final THREE matches of the season simultaneously rather than just the last week of the season as is currently the case. Not an unreasonable proposal when you hear the Frenchman claim that “There are advantages and disadvantages to kicking off later than the other teams. If you kick off later than your rivals and they have lost, then you are in a more comfortable situation. Psychologically it can give you a lift and it’s true that it can apply for us or Manchester United or Chelsea, but I think it would be better not to give any team this advantage.” While it makes some sense, the proposal is simply not practical.
