United finally knocked Liverpool off their perch last season. Following an endless supply of trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson, none meant more to United’s global legion of fans than their 19th league title – simply because it finally put Liverpool in their place. When Alan Hansen captained Liverpool to their most recent championship in 1990, the tally read 18-7 in Liverpool’s favour and few would have given the Scot a prayer of capturing one championship, never mind 12.

The boss is fighting mad, his Manchester United side is facing a backs to the wall fight to regain the title. And nobody does siege mentality better than the Sir Alex Ferguson. It doesn’t matter who has upset him, whether it be the authorities, the media, fans, referees or fellow managers, when it comes to the crunch and United are under threat, the blockade is put in place. Former United defender Gary Pallister played under Sir Alex for 9 years winning four titles and three FA Cups. He told M.E.N’s Stuart Mathieson “I saw it for the first time in 1990”

Sitting pretty top of the table on Christmas Day in the closest title race for years. Two points clear and with games in hand, Sir Alex Ferguson has been there, done that more times than he can remember so his thoughts on what may lie ahead in the second half of the season are well worth listening to. “Someone asked me are you surprised to be top of the league?” he explains “I’m only surprised that people are surprised! All the top teams are dropping points, they don’t recognise how tough the league is now. My aim is to be top of the league by January 4. If we’re still top then, we’ve done well” he said.

He has also been awarded the famous Jules Rimet Centenary Award in 2004 given to journalists who have covered 11 or more World Cups. Miller has now revealed just how close Manchester United came to replacing Sir Alex Ferguson in the winter of 1989 but that sensational story which could have changed football history was never published.
