Some are unkind enough to refer to it as the Daily Fail – sorry, I cannot agree! Not when The Daily Mail comes up with the sort of interview that Sir Bobby Charlton gave to his friend of 40 years Jeff Powell. There were no leading questions, no double edged attempts to uncover some sort of sensational story which had been laying dormant during Charltons’ decades at Old Trafford. Instead, Powell simply allowed Sir Bobby to recollect his memories of the 1968 European Cup defeat of  Benfica in 1968 and give his thoughts on Saturday’s Final against Barcelona. It makes for a fascinating story which should be read by United – and indeed, all football fans.

It’s a 30 year old film which was panned by many but to me Escape to Victory is one of the greatest football movies of all time. The climax was that memorable strike from King Pele yet this weekend Wayne Rooney scored an almost identical effort lifting the roof off Old Trafford with one of the goals of the season. Henry Winter wrote in the Sunday Telegraph that “One fan declared it the best overhead kick since Pele in ‘Escape to Victory’. Anyone familiar with the movie will love this”.  Apart from the ‘Black Rooney’, the movie also featured such football greats as Bobby Moore, Osvaldo Ardiles, Mike Summerbee and a host of  other world stars.

And so it’s that time of the year again when newspapers, websites and magazines from all over the world highlight what they believe to have been the best and worst moments in football in 2010, looking at events both on and off the pitch. In this country, the majority of the “worst” moments have been deemed to be concerned with the morally bankrupt, money grabbing ways of the players today and the underhanded, corrupt and sinister dealings of FIFA, with the plaudits for the “best” moments being handed out mainly to Lionel Messi and his teams inspiring 5-0 demolition of Real Madrid in November. It’s amazing what can be found while doing a little bit of Googling! Four Four Two magazine asked their readers to send questions they would like to ask Manchester United legend George Best four years before he passed away in November 2005.
