Fletcher secured United first Premier League win at Fratton Park

Darren Fletcher was the one to save Manchester United once again from dropping points after his only goal secured for United their first win against Portsmouth yesterday. The fans watched the return of Carlos Tevez and Anderson in the squad. However the problem with scoring goals to be solved as Rooney could not score again.

The first real threat came from Portsmouth’s Bouba Diop when he surprised Van der Sar with a long shot just went wide of Edwin van der Sar’s right hand post. Then United had a chance when Wes Brown crossed the ball from the right side to Wayne Rooney who stroked the ball but it was saved with no difficulty by David James in the centre of his goal.

United begun to retain control of the game with style Portsmouth forced two chances with Evra needing to get back and put Crouch off his shot after Defoe made the first opening, helped by a mis-kick from Anderson.

On the 32 minutes, Fletcher scored the first goal when Evra crossed the ball from left side after taking two players, Fletcher touched the ball and Pompey’s defender Distin got the final touch into his own goal to give United the lead.

Pompey tried to equalize but their efforts were collapsed as Rio Ferdinand, who was the captain, and Vidic were in their top forms.

After the game, Sir Alex was delighted to win the first game in the premier league which he hopes it can help the team in next games against Liverpool after the UEFA super cup in Monaco.

“I think we showed we have got good quality.

Also he was concerned about the possibility of adding new striker to the squad before the end of the transfer window on the 31st of August.

“There is only a week to go and you start to concern yourself a little bit,” Ferguson told Sky Sports .

“We would like to add obviously, but we just have to wait and see what happens.”
