Greatest United XI, Busby Babes and The Terminator

Goalkeepers and Defenders

So, another review is here, the good people at PR Genie have decided that more time and devotion shall be spent on my couch as I trawl through some obvious, some surprising, and some downright ridiculous candidates for the best Manchester United XI. In stark comparison to the otherwise impressive Rooney Goal Machine, the opening titles and graphics have a slight air of class about them, less Europa League, more Champions League perhaps. Loud classical music blares triumphantly with the overblown grandiosity of a late ‘90s SKY Sports advert. The basic format is from a competition invented by the club’s website in 2011 where fans vote on the best players for each position, based on what I’m guessing is a rigid 4-4-2 formation.

No turkeys in this Christmas cracker…..

Welcome to Liam “Wrestlemania” Brown’s Barry Norman/Claudia Winkleman impersonation.  Finally, I have been asked to join the likes of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert and become a film critic.  Ok, maybe not, but we were kindly handed a copy of Rooney Goal Machine for our consideration, so after popping it on  during a lazy Sunday Evening, I’ll tell you what I thought if you should lend me your ears…

Che Sera Sera as the season reaches its climax

Just like everyone else, I’m feeling the nervous tension. An awkward trip to Wigan this weekend, were precious points must not be dropped, another tough one to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night to face the reigning champions followed by a visit to Anfield were Liverpool is certain to do everything in their power to try and stop Sir Alex Ferguson from completing his promise for Manchester United to ‘Knock them off their f*****g perch’ once and for all. Pressure? What pressure? But let’s face it, that’s what our club has thrived on for 20 years.

United are sitting proudly on top of the Premiership and are widely regarded as hot favourites to end up as this seasons champions. The Saints on the other hand are fighting to stay in the race for promotion from league Division One to the Championship.

The Great Escape For Lucky United – How Did We Do It?

And so by the skin of our teeth and thanks to some inspired Berbatov magic, the incredible unbeaten run of the “Crap Invincibles” continues. Based on our first half display, the tag is well justified.  As the song says, “We’re shit, and we’re top of the league”, but don’t forget, both parts of that statement are correct. This truly was a textbook definition of a game of two halves, with United exhibiting the best and worst parts of what has been prominent in our game all season, but what’s the cliché? The mark of champions? It was certainly evident tonight. Read the full story

Darren Gibson – Not Bad, Not Great, But Let’s Get Off His Back

Having had a chance to calm down and get over the disappointment of United throwing away another lead late on in a game, I’ve taken advantage of the benefits of Sky + and re-watched the game against Birmingham from Tuesday night to try and figure out what went wrong and why in that rather damp affair.

Following the full-time whistle, my immediate reaction was to lay most of the blame for the teams mediocre performance mainly at the feet of Darren Gibson, a man I’ve often described as a “Champ Manager 14’er.” What this means is that, in Champ Manager terms, most of his stats (passing, pace, technique, tackling) would be 14 out of 20, with the possible exception that his long shots may reach as high as 16 out of 20. Another explanation I’ve heard to summarise his ability is that, “he’d do well at Villa.”
