At the end of 90 minutes, United found out what Santa had given them for Christmas; 5 goals, 3 points, dropped points for our rivals and the helping hand from referee Phil Dowd in sending Wigan Athletic’s Conor Sammon off in the 40^th minute. Wolverhampton Wanderers host Manchester United on the back of an away defeat to Bolton on Tuesday when a disastrous Ronald Zubar back pass allowed Daniel Sturridge to steal a 93rd minute winner at the Reebok Stadium. In it’s preview of the game manutd.com continued That result left Mick McCarthy’s men three points adrift at the bottom of the Barclays Premier League, in the starkest contrast to United who are now five points clear at the right end of the table. Sir Alex Ferguson’s current side have matched the 1999 Treble winners’ run of 29 league games without defeat and will fancy making it 30 having won all six clashes with Wolves since losing 1-0 at Molineux in 2004. And so by the skin of our teeth and thanks to some inspired Berbatov magic, the incredible unbeaten run of the “Crap Invincibles” continues. Based on our first half display, the tag is well justified.  As the song says, “We’re shit, and we’re top of the league”, but don’t forget, both parts of that statement are correct. This truly was a textbook definition of a game of two halves, with United exhibiting the best and worst parts of what has been prominent in our game all season, but what’s the cliché? Let’s be perfectly clear. This is NOT about Manchester United defender Rafael being red carded in the scoreless draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon. That incident was simply the latest example of the injustices which happen in football all too frequently. All clubs have suffered by them but there’s absolutely no reason why they should continue to occur. Huge amounts of money can depend on those type of split second decisions. They can make the difference between championships being won or lost, gain a money spinning spot in European competition and can even result in the ultimate penalty of relegation. The sad fact is that all these controversies can be so easily eliminated!

The first priority for Manchester United was to avoid defeat at White Hart Lane and in the end it was a case of mission accomplished. Tottenham will consider this scoreless draw a missed opportunity after defender Rafael was harshly red carded 17 minutes from the end but with captain Nemanja Vidic an absolute colossus in the centre of the defence, United held out for the point that takes them back to the top of the table with two games in hand.

Despite the heavy 0-4 defeat suffered at West Ham in the Carling Cup last week, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to again leave a number of senior players out of his starting lineup for Tuesday night’s Champions League meeting with Valencia. Both clubs have already qualified for the knockout round although top spot in Group C is still up for grabs. United have 13 points from five games and will win the group if they avoid defeat against the Spaniards.
