United finally knocked Liverpool off their perch last season. Following an endless supply of trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson, none meant more to United’s global legion of fans than their 19th league title – simply because it finally put Liverpool in their place. When Alan Hansen captained Liverpool to their most recent championship in 1990, the tally read 18-7 in Liverpool’s favour and few would have given the Scot a prayer of capturing one championship, never mind 12.

Manchester United andEnglandlegend Bryan Robson was known for his own fearless approach – a quality that has to be shown again as he deals with a course of treatment for throat cancer. In his first major interview since he was diagnosed with the condition, the man remembered for popping his own dislocated shoulder back into place during an England World Cup match and getting on with the game, is going about this fight with the same dignified courage.

Perhaps more than any other club, Manchester United has been blessed with many leaders over the years. Not all of them were club captains but legends like Bill Foulkes, Bobby Charlton, Martin Buchan, Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand immediately come to mind, all had the great leadership qualities which played a major role in guiding the club to so much success. Current skipper Nemanja Vidic can now be added to that list. Since coming to Old Trafford from Spartak Moscow five years ago, the big Serbian central defender has developed into a colossus who is one of the favourites to pick up this season’s PFA Player of the Year award in the next few weeks. Vidic spoke with Gemma Thompson from Inside United magazine, where he gave his views on being a Red.

If you are anything like me, reading a good book on a lazy Sunday is one of the most enjoyable times of the week – unless you have a game to watch which in this day and age happens more often than I would like. Call me an old fart if you want but a 3pm kick off on a Saturday afternoon is what I grew up with and freely admit that I yearn for the return of those long gone days.
