A Wigan Athletic and Premier League debut facing Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 was tough enough but a club century appearance directly opposing Manchester United’s form player Nani three years later is no easier for Honduran defender Maynor Figueroa. In line to make his landmark mark for Wigan on Saturday, the 27 year old explained how his tough initiation into English football was one of the main factors in him reaching the unique milestone. He will join Paul Scharner, Chris Kirkland and Mario Melchiot in the exclusive club if he features against the league leaders this weekend.

This was far too good to pass up for a United fan. It’s reproduced here just as it was published on the Mail Online with no further comment from this smart arse. “The match programme for Manchester City’s Europa League tie with Aris Salonika was scrapped at the last minute after it emerged the Greek club had mistakenly printed a spoof team photograph of their English opponents. A few copies made it into circulation for Tuesday night’s game in Thessaloniki, but the bulk were withdrawn by embarrassed Aris officials when the blunder came to light.

Let me admit up front that I am NOT a betting man. I don’t even know how to place a football wager so the last impression I want to give is that I have a great knowledge of what I’m talking about. Nevertheless an item on the Manchester United official website drew my attention this week. It highlighted the fact that most United players are strangely way off the pace in the Betfair PFA Player of the Year market. “If you fancy the Reds to win the league, then why not back one of the boys to bag the PFA prize? It’s difficult not to be cynical in this day and age when every media outlet is trying to outdo its rivals with a sensational story. The Manchester United Evening News can usually be relied upon to present rational, believable news but even I find the revelation that Sir Alex Ferguson will be handed “his biggest ever transfer war chest, with more than £100m to spend in January and at the end of the season” difficult to swallow. Sorry, I simply cannot buy it. If, and it’s a mighty big IF, there’s any truth in it, the Glazers must be looking at rewarding Ferguson with an unexpected windfall for 25 years of service before he walks off into the sunset at the end of next season! Does anyone find the following even remotely believable?

Despite the heavy 0-4 defeat suffered at West Ham in the Carling Cup last week, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to again leave a number of senior players out of his starting lineup for Tuesday night’s Champions League meeting with Valencia. Both clubs have already qualified for the knockout round although top spot in Group C is still up for grabs. United have 13 points from five games and will win the group if they avoid defeat against the Spaniards.

It’s a well known and medically accepted fact that the older we get, the more confusing life becomes. Well here’s someone just a couple of years younger than Sir Alex Ferguson who was totally bamboozled by two totally conflicting reports which appeared on the very same, unnamed website, within a few minutes of each other. Is it simply my advancing years or am I missing something? Decide for yourselves.
