If Sir Alex Ferguson can only afford to sign one cheque this summer, it should be made out to Inter Milan for the signature of classy Holland midfielder Wesley Sneijder. So many names have been linked to Manchester United thus far, so many hopes have been raised and dashed, that one begins to wonder if there will be any signings made at all. Those hopes have risen sky high again with reports that Ferguson wants the 26 year old to spearhead next seasons bid for glory.

Paul Scholes is ready to end his playing career at the end of the new season and go into coaching. Scholes, who admitted prior to the World Cup that he would have come out of international retirement to play for England if Fabio Capello had asked him earlier, says he has one more top flight season left in him. “I am coming to the end of my playing career and I maybe have one year left” the 35 year-old said. “I have started doing my coaching badges back in England and hopefully one day I will be able to coach kids or coach some kind of team somewhere.”

Talk of revenge filled the air when fate decided that Germany’s Bayern Munich and Manchester United should meet in a blockbuster quarter final during this weeks European Champions League draw. The two glamour clubs had produced that dramatic 1999 Nou Camp final where United completed a historic treble in the dying seconds of a game which appeared certain to reward Bayerns almost entire 90 minutes of dominance with a deserved 1-0 victory until football proved that miracles can and do happen!

At some point during the next season Sir Alex Ferguson will have to make a decision which will be present him with an agonising dilemma. Goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar will turn 40 in six months time and while the giant Dutchman continues to show the same class that has been his hallmark throughout his long career, the time is fast approaching for him to hang up his gloves.
