Mark Bosnich spent a total of six years during two spells playing for Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford giving him a good insight into what makes ‘The Boss’ tick. The former keeper is now a leading football pundit on Fox Sports which carries live coverage of every Premier League game in Australia. Writing for Sydney’s Daily Telegraph in the lead up to the seasons climax, Bosnich reveals what it is that continues to drive Sir Alex year after year.

Manchester United travel to Newcastle just three days after hopes of another treble was snuffed out at Wembley but when the ‘impossible dream’ was achieved in 1999, it was the same Toon who provided one of the last hurdles for United. The FA Cup Final was the second of the three trophies which had to be won in order to keep the dream alive, leaving only Big Ears needing to be lifted in Barcelona four days later. As Mark Bradley from PA Sport reported at the time “Their night of destiny now awaits them in the Nou Camp but for the time being United can celebrate their third Double of the 1990s”

Much has been made of treble winning goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel suggestion that Manchester United should grab the £50-60million Real Madrid is reportedly willing to pay for Wayne Rooney in summer. Not a thought that will go down well with many United fans but the truth is that there may just be some sense in the possibility. Rooney has just completed a year of hell both on and off the field before finally regaining his sensational goalscoring form recently.

It’s a well known fact that newspapers are not exactly the bastions of truth but there are some which have proven to be more reliable than others, The Guardian is one of them. If you can believe what it is reporting, Manchester United is looking for not one but TWO goalkeepers to replace veteran Edwin van der Sar when his imminent retirement is eventually announced. According to a report published on Thursday, United has “provisionally agreed a £3.5m deal to replace Edwin van der Sar with a goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has flatly described as not good enough to play for the club. Anders Lindegaard, the newly established Danish international, will move to Old Trafford in January but Schmeichel thinks Sir Alex Ferguson is making a serious error bringing in the 26 year old from the Norwegian club Aalesunds FK.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been told that Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina is the only man to succeed Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford – and it’s advice which comes from a man who Fergie is certain to take notice of. United legend Peter Schmeichel reckons that the Spanish keeper should be United’s top target when Sir Alex looks to replace his 40 year old veteran at the end of the season.

Those last few hours before a match are always nerve wracking ones as the kick off is anxiously awaited. So here’s a piece put together by the Manchester Evening News which could help sooth those nerves. It has selected the ultimate Manchester United starting eleven based on legends who have made the most appearances for the club. A total of 6,500 were made between them and a flexible 4-4-2 formation – with a touch of journalistic license here and there, was used to come up with this star studded, long service line up.
