The famous old saying that “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire” has convinced some pundits that there was much more than meets the eye to the bizarre events involving Manchester United and Portugal star Nani on the eve of the World Cup. The official line from the Portugese camp was that the tricky winger suffered a collarbone injury during a training camp in Lisbon yet he still flew out to South Africa with the team. After training with Carlos Queiroz’s squad for two days however, he was ruled out of the tournament, flew back to Portugal and was replaced by Benfica midfielder Ruben Amorim.

Amongst the ongoing rumors that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is still determined to tempt Manchester United with a mammoth £80m offer for Wayne Rooney plus another £30m for Nemanja Vidic, the name which could be on everyone’s lips at the start of next season if Vidic leaves Old Trafford may be that of his Serbia central defensive partner Neven Subotic.

Chances that central defender Nemanja Vidic has played his last game for Manchester United appear to be increasing by the day as Sir Alex Ferguson accelerates his efforts to sign a replacement. The two front runners are Juventus’ Italian international Giorgio Chiellini and Denmark’s Simon Kjaer from Palermo. As well as an expected £20m bid from Manchester City for Vidic, Real Madrid also want to secure a deal by offering French striker Karim Benzema as a sweetener for a Vidic transfer.

Within the large squad that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has at his disposal there are a core group of players who are crucial in his attempt to reclaim the Premier League title from Chelsea. He would hate to lose any of them but if the many reports being circulated prove to be correct, Ferguson may have to resign himself to the fact that key central defender Nemanja Vidic will not be at Old Trafford next season.
