FLASHBACK 1999: When Toon was a Treble victim

Manchester United travel to Newcastle just three days after hopes of another treble was snuffed out at Wembley but when the ‘impossible dream’ was achieved in 1999, it was the same Toon who provided one of the last hurdles for United. The FA Cup Final was the second of the three trophies which had to be won in order to keep the dream alive, leaving only Big Ears needing to be lifted in Barcelona four days later. As Mark Bradley from PA Sport reported at the time “Their night of destiny now awaits them in the Nou Camp but for the time being United can celebrate their third Double of the 1990s”

FLASHBACK to 2001/02: A 5-3 thriller at West Ham

Eight matches remaining, 24 points up for grabs and Manchester United must get every one of them from clashes like the one at West Ham on Saturday if they want to keep their nose in front of their rivals. As Sir Alex Ferguson often admits ‘It’s squeaky bum time’. There have been many dramatic meetings between the two over the years with the eight goal thriller in March 2002 one of the most memorable. Fans may not witness another goal fest this time but the stakes are high for both sides – albeit for totally opposite reasons, which will all but guarantee another tense battle.

VIDEO: Is Chicharito another Denis Law?

Many has compared him with Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, possibly because Javier Hernandez  has the knack of coming on as a sub and grabbing vital goals. But there’s an even older United legend that Chicharito can be likened to. Those with long enough memories may or may not agree that the young Mexican shows a lot of similarities to Denis Law. The King used to take his goals – lots of them, in much the same way that Hernandez does today. Always in the right place at the right time to somehow find a way of nicking the ball into the net. Rarely did either of them slam pile drivers from 20 or 30 metres like Wayne Rooney sometimes does but if there’s a sniff, you can bet that Chicharito will profit from it just as Law used to do. Here’s his two goals in Mexico’s 3-1 defeat of Paraguay on Saturday.

Spain’s Valencia comes to Old Trafford on Tuesday night hoping to register their first away win over Manchester United and collect the three points which will take them to the top of Group C. 1999 VIDEO: Liverpool fails to stop United TREBLE

With Manchester United drawn to meet Liverpool in the FA Cup third round, memories were soon rekindled of the 1999 fourth round clash on the road to the Treble in 1999. Sir Alex Ferguson later reflected that defeating Liverpool was the pivotal point which set up that unforgettable season. Liverpool had taken an early lead through Michael Owen leaving United to hit the woodwork twice and dominating most of the second half without being able to find a reply. Home fans were all but ready to accept an inevitable end to a treble dream before United finally found a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
