Nani outshines Ronaldo as Fletcher suffers defeat


The 2012 European Championship qualifiers on the weekend provided starkly contrasting fortunes for two of  Manchester United’s internationals. While Nani was turning on a dazzling performance in Portugals’ 3-1 home defeat of Denmark, Darren Fletcher and Scotland went down 0-1 to the Czech Republic in Prague to leave the Scots trailing in second place behind Spain in their group. They now face a crunch match with the world champions at Hampden Park on Tuesday night.

Draw at Sunderland is a point gained NOT two lost


Win at home, draw away and you win the title. At least that was the magic formula in a previous life but that was in the days when a draw meant half rather than a third of a win. While 76 points may mean remaining in the Premiership chase it’s unlikely to be sufficient to take the trophy even though Manchester United managed to do it in 1996-97 with 75 and Arsenal took the title on goal difference with 76 in 1988-89. United retained it’s unbeaten record in their scoreless meeting with Sunderland for it’s fourth away draw of the season and while failing to get maximum points was disappointing, there were some real positives to come out of a tough encounter.

So what’s the REAL story behind Wayne Rooney’s ankle injury which was given by the club’s website as the reason for him missing the trip to Valencia? According to Neil Custis in The Sun “Officially, boss Ferguson is leaving out his 24 year old frontman because of a right ankle problem. The Scot said yesterday ‘He will be out for two or three weeks. It is a straightforward ankle ligament injury’ But the manager admitted last week the pressure of public attention on the player is starting to weigh him down. An extended break will help recharge his batteries.”
