Like thousands of Manchester United fans – and possibly many City ones, I cannot decide what to make of the shock, free transfer move by Owen Hargreaves to the blue side of town. Why? By all reports, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, West Brom and a number of Championship outfits showed interest in signing him so why go to a club where his chances of even getting a seat on the bench will be highly improbable. You would think that after so long without kicking a ball, giving himself the chance of getting as much game time as possible – and an opportunity to prove his fitness, would have been his major objective.

So it turned out to be the old chestnut. Did Manchester United gain a point or did they lose two in the title chase? An answer may be provided in 24 hours when Arsenal face Spurs in what could be their last chance to stay in the race. He’s now into his third season at Old Trafford after Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson paid a club record transfer fee of £30.75 million to get him from Tottenham Hotspur – a fee which incidentally Dimitar Berbatov had absolutely nothing to do with. Now, after 103 appearances, the Bulgarian may finally be accepted by United fans after taking his goal tally to 38 with a five goal haul against Blackburn Rovers. Among many other complaints about his game, critics accuse Berba of being lazy, inconsistent and does not score as many times as an expensive striker should. The statistics show an entirely different story.
