Manchester United fans have traditionally been generous in giving former players a warm welcome whenever they return to Old Trafford with their new club. Saturday afternoon will be no different when Birmingham City goalkeeper Ben Foster comes back to his former home for the first time since his £6million transfer in the summer. And why not? Foster made a total of 23 appearances for United during the five years he spent as a red but finally decided that the only way for his career to develop was to move elsewhere.

Manchester United are just one game short of the seasons half way mark yet the old, old theory which stood the test of time in the days of two points for a win surprisingly seems to be holding. Win at home, draw away and enough points are accumulated to win the title. It’s certainly not what Sir Alex Ferguson aims for in this day and age when a draw is not much better than a defeat but if it means being top of the table, does anyone care?

Another away game, another draw and another two points lost when they had appeared to be in the bag until Birmingham City snatched a last minute equaliser. Despite that however, Manchester United ends the year still unbeaten, top of the table with two games in hand over second placed Manchester City and here’s a little bit of history which augers well for United. No team which has entered a new year undefeated has ever failed to go on to win the title except Sheffield United way back in 1899-1900, that’s all of 110 years ago when they finished runners up to Aston Villa. On the other five occasions when Arsenal twice, Preston, Leeds and Liverpool ended the year undefeated, they were crowned Champions.

When Manchester United travel to St Andrews on Tuesday night it will be on the eight anniversary of the first meeting between the two clubs since Birmingham City’s first ever season in the Premier League. It took place at Old Trafford on December 28, 2002 with manager Steve Bruce facing Sir Alex Ferguson in the dugouts for the first time since his departure as a United legend. He was to get no joy however as United took the points with a hard fought victory.

The big freeze may have cost Manchester United it’s place at the top of the table simply because Blackpool’s 110 year old Bloomfield Road Stadium is the only one in the Premier League not equipped with an undersoil heating system. The disruption and inconvenience caused by that postponement should not be acceptable in this day and age. United and its fans happened to be the ones to suffer this weekend but it could have just as easily been any other club.
