When Manchester United visit Stoke City on Sunday, the match will of course be played at the relatively new Brittania Stadium rather than the now demolished Victoria Ground where former United forward Jimmy Greenhoff spent seven years before joining brother Brian at Old Trafford in 1976. The highlight of Jimmy’s career came in the 1977 FA Cup Final where he scored United’s winning goal to deny Liverpool a famous Treble, an honor which was destined to be won by United itself 22 years later.

If asked, you can rest assured that Manchester United Brazilian midfielder Anderson will be the first to admit that he’s a very a lucky man. Instead of preparing for the new season with his team mates at Carrington, he could just as easily be lying in a hospital bed in Portugal…or worse. In all the media gossip over possible transfer deals that Manchester United may or may not make during the summer, a comment made by Sir Alex Ferguson during the recent pre season tour of North America was almost totally overlooked. Yet it goes a long way towards explaining the reason why the only ones completed so far were those of two youngsters who have barely hit their twenties. A move that has been on the cards for most of the season now appears to be imminent after Manchester United accepted a £6m bid from Birmingham City which will take goalkeeper Ben Foster to St Andrews. It will end a difficult period for the England international who failed to take a chance to be first choice at Old Trafford.
