When Manchester United visit Stoke City on Sunday, the match will of course be played at the relatively new Brittania Stadium rather than the now demolished Victoria Ground where former United forward Jimmy Greenhoff spent seven years before joining brother Brian at Old Trafford in 1976. The highlight of Jimmy’s career came in the 1977 FA Cup Final where he scored United’s winning goal to deny Liverpool a famous Treble, an honor which was destined to be won by United itself 22 years later.

If asked, you can rest assured that Manchester United Brazilian midfielder Anderson will be the first to admit that he’s a very a lucky man. Instead of preparing for the new season with his team mates at Carrington, he could just as easily be lying in a hospital bed in Portugal…or worse. He was fortunate not to suffer serious injury last month when he had to be dragged unconscious from the blazing wreckage of his high powered sports car in the early hours of the morning after allegedly spending the previous night in a nightclub.

In all the media gossip over possible transfer deals that Manchester United may or may not make during the summer, a comment made by Sir Alex Ferguson during the recent pre season tour of North America was almost totally overlooked. Yet it goes a long way towards explaining the reason why the only ones completed so far were those of two youngsters who have barely hit their twenties. Chris Smalling will not be 21 until November while Javier Hernandez only turned 22 in June.

A move that has been on the cards for most of the season now appears to be imminent after Manchester United accepted a £6m bid from Birmingham City which will take goalkeeper Ben Foster to St Andrews. It will end a difficult period for the England international who failed to take a chance to be first choice at Old Trafford. He made several high profile blunders when deputising for Edwin van der Sar before Christmas allowing the Dutch veteran to reclaim his place once he had recovered from injury.

Manchester United fans have seen their fair share of Premiership deciding final day dramas over the years: this was not one of them. By the time midfielder Darren Fletcher gave United the lead on the half hour of a must win game against Stoke City at Old Trafford, table topping Chelsea were already 1-0 up against ten man Wigan and the three points they needed to clinch the title were for all intents and purposes already in the bag.

A season that in all truth did not begin with the usual high expectations for Manchester United due to a number of well known, on and off field events comes to a conclusion at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon with the champions surprisingly still in contention to retain a Premier League trophy which has been securely locked up at the Old Trafford cabinet since 2006.
