The Doc has a prescription for Sir Alex


Tommy Docherty was one of the best loved managers at Manchester United in the seventies – despite leading the club to relegation in 1974. The Doc now believes that Sir Alex Ferguson will have to spend big in the transfer market this summer if he hopes to match Europes best. Ferguson led his side to a 19th League title last month but were well beaten in the Champions League final by Barcelona. Docherty, who managed United between 1972 and 1977 - READ HERE – admits his former side are a long way behind the La Liga champions at present but believes Ferguson is the right man to come up with a plan to thwart Pep Guardiola’s side next season.

‘The Doc’s Devils’ is a hell of a United book


Having been fortunate enough to become attracted to the magic of  Manchester United just prior to going into my teens a couple of years before Munich, I have lived through the eras of every Old Trafford manager since, from the great Sir Matt Busby to the incredible success of Sir Alex Ferguson. Those two legends have left their own legacy to both the club and to English football itself which is unlikely to ever be matched. There was however another manager in between who has left an immense impression which even after more than 30 years still remains today.

John Carey – Busby’s first captain at Old Trafford


If the name John Carey is mentioned to most Manchester United fans today, the response is likely to be a blank stare together with a puzzled question of John who? Yet Carey was the man Sir Matt Busby put his faith in to lead the first of his many teams after taking over the reins at a bombed out Old Trafford when World War 2 came to an end. The Irishman went on to captain the side at Wembley in the 4-2 defeat of Blackpool in the 1948 FA Cup Final and was four times runners up in the old First Division between 1946/47 and 1950/51 before United finally clinched the title in 1951/52.
