Book Review: The Vidic dream lives on

The dream proved to be one step too far! When Nemanja Vidic led Manchester United onto the Wembley pitch to face Barcelona on Saturday, he must have been visualising himself lifting The Champions League trophy for his side a few hours later, but it was not meant to be. The brilliant Catalans made sure of it. It was a dream that the big Serbian had been having for months, one that must now wait for at least another season but there’s little doubt that the man known as Vida has not given up on it. His inbuilt determination absolutely assures it.

A United Wembley destiny – simply BELIEVE

The old saying says that  ’A thousand people, a thousand opinions’ applies to football more than anything. There’s absolutely no doubt that many are heavily biased, yet they cannot be totally ignored! Some are more objective than others so it does no harm to at least listen to what the ‘experts’ have to say. Whether they count for anything at the end of the day is a completely different question but they’re all part of the tension built anticipation which forms the climax for what may turn out to be an unforgettable Manchester United season.

Vidic can’t wait to clinch the title at Blackburn

Nemanja Vidic is a point away from hoisting his first trophy as Manchester United captain – and he thanks the Reds’ critics for creating the platform for the achievement. The 30-year-old Serb has also warned rivals of the champions-elect that Sir Alex Ferguson’s much-maligned new generation of players will get even better next season. In Fergie’s era as Old Trafford boss, only Gary Neville in November 2005 walked into a skipper’s job facing a more daunting task in the aftermath of Roy Keane’s controversial exit, Neville took possession of the armband in a time of transition and turmoil.

Bill Foulkes still ‘United in Triumph and Tragedy’

They sure don’t make them like Billy Foulkes anymore – although I must admit that current Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic comes from the same mould. The clubs official website says of the 60’s legend “In a distinguished career, Foulkes won First Division championship medals in 1956, 1957, 1965 and 1967 and was back at Wembley, this time a winner, in the 1963 FA Cup final. Add to that his part in the 1968 European Cup winning team and it’s somewhat surprising he was capped only once by England, against Northern Ireland in October 1954. Although noted more for stopping goals, Foulkes is fondly recalled for his goal against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in 1968, which helped send Manchester United into their victorious European Cup final.
